Most schools will allow you to log in and out with your username and password as many times as you like. The New Jersey MVC  mandates that the course is timed and last 6 hours.

Can I attend an NJ Defensive Driving Course online?

The New Jersey Defensive Driving  Course may be completed online.

You are also NOT eligible for traffic school if you have gone to traffic school for another ticket that you got in the last 36 months. There are other reasons you may not be eligible for traffic school. Check with your local court.

 

What are the eligibility requirements for taking a New Jersey Defensive Driving  Course?

  • Any New Jersey driver can take a Defensive Driving Course.
  • The MVC will apply a 2 point credit to an New Jersey Official Driver Record for successful completion of a MVC-approved Defensive Driving Course.
  • The credit may only be applied once 5 Years.

  • Traffic schools are required to verify your identity with a government-issued ID before traffic school attendance.

What you need to do after you attend New Jersey Defensive Driving school?

Once you complete your New Jersey traffic school, you’ll receive credit for taking the traffic course and your Traffic School will automatically notify the New Jersey MVC.

Point Reduction Students: Traffic schools report course completions to the New Jersey MVC electronically for point reduction.

 We recommend:

  • Print a copy of your certificate for your records.
  • Check with the MVC within 15-20 business days after you complete your course to make sure everything has been processed on their end.
It can take up to 15 business days for the MVC to process your completion, so please plan accordingly to meet your deadline.

Insurance Rate Discounts:

If you completed New Jersey Defensive Driving to reduce your auto insurance rates, you should print the certificate and deliver to your insurance company.

  • Print a copy of your certificate for your records.
  • Check with the BMV within 7-10 business days after you complete your course to make sure everything has been processed on their end.
It can take up to 10 business days for the BMV to process your completion, so please plan accordingly to meet your deadline. Your license may be suspended if you do not complete your course on time.

You are only allowed to take a Defensive Driving Course Every Five Years in New Jersey

I went to a defensive driving class, but the citation is still on my driving record.  What should I do?

If the traffic citation is the citation for which you attended a defensive driving program, contact the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and ask them correct your driver record.
