Idaho Traffic Law

Idaho assigns points to your driving record every time you are convicted of a traffic violation. The number of points depends on the severity of the violation.

The Idaho Transportation Department tracks these violations and points. The Driver Services Section administers the tracking. They also receive notices from other states and Canada of traffic violations. This means that a ticket you get in Montana will end up in your record in Idaho.

Points stay on your record for three years after the conviction date.

What are the eligibility requirements for taking an Idaho defensive driving program?
  • You may take a defensive driving course once every three years. The time period begins on the date you finish the course.
    • The course must be taken before a suspension for accumulation of points takes place.
    • A point reduction can only be applied to an Idaho driver’s license record.

Note: Completion of a DDC or TSC DOES NOT REMOVE convictions from the driving record. The
completion of a DDC or TSC will have no effect on any CDL disqualifying action.
